Nel corso dei lavori il Boni manifestò immediatamente le sue doti di disegnatore di grande qualità, particolarmente attento al rispetto del carattere storico dei monumenti antichi. Frequentò i corsi di architettura all’Accademia di Belle Arti, approfondì gli studi classici e strinse legami con il mondo culturale inglese, finché nel 1888 fu chiamato a Roma dal ministro dell’Istruzione P. Boselli, prima come segretario consistent with l. a. Regia Calcografia, poi come ispettore dei monumenti presso los angeles Direzione Generale delle Antichità e Belle Arti, a capo della quale period allora G. Fiorelli .
